USS Carney Completes Mid-patrol Training and Maintenance Period

By USS Carny Public AFFairs

The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) departed Naval Station Rota, Spain, after completing a training and maintenance availability (TRAV) period, Jan. 26-Feb. 12, 2018.

TRAV allowed Carney to complete continuous certification training and important voyage maintenance after operating throughout the Mediterranean and Black Seas the past two months.

“Due to the high operational tempo of being a forward-deployed naval force asset, we operate in a continuous training environment,” said Lt. j.g. Christopher Sorbello, training officer aboard Carney. “By breaking up a patrol and conducting a training availability, we are able to keep perishable skills sharp, even as we are operational and forward deployed.”

Carney’s Sailors benefited from the TRAV period, and the ship met all of its training requirements, certifications and maintenance objectives, according to Cmdr. Peter F. Halvorsen, commanding officer of Carney.

“TRAV periods are vital to the ship’s operability and mission,” said Halvorsen. “We have to ensure the ship maintains mission readiness by conducting reps and sets in all warfare areas.”

This TRAV period, Carney certified in maintenance and material management  with an overall score of  94 and completed initial training packages in both strike warfare and visit, board, search, and seizure operations.  In addition, twenty Sailors completed a two-week testing and qualification security reaction force basic training.

Carney’s crew also took advantage of their time in port by conducting topside preservation and completing numerous repairs, ensuring the ship is ready to continue their fourth forward-deployed patrol in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and combined operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
