NAPLES, Italy – Elements of the Naples-based Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Africa/ Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet (NAVEUR-NAVAF/C6F) staff will conduct joint forces headquarters deployment and sustainment training in Gaeta, Italy, Dec. 7-11.

Personnel and equipment making the temporary deployment to Gaeta as necessary support to the training will begin to arrive Dec. 3.

“To be an effective staff we must be ready for any contingency,” said Vice Adm. Harry Harris, commander, U.S. 6th Fleet. “Even as 6th Fleet assets stand the watch throughout the European and African theaters, it is important that we stress our headquarters elements by training for unforeseen events and exercising our ability to command and control those assets.”

This training is designed to test the NAVEUR-NAVAF/C6F staff’s ability to transfer mission functions to alternate command sites in the event primary headquarters suddenly become unavailable due to a natural or man-made event. The training will also test the staff on command and control functions and crisis action planning from this location.

“The purpose of this training is to demonstrate the staff’s expeditionary ability from a field location,” said Craig Linderman, joint training and readiness exercise supervisor for NAVEUR-NAVAF/C6F. “We are used to operating from ships, not in the field, so this will provide a scenario the staff is not normally accustomed to. This site has been chosen to provide the staff realistic challenges for various scenarios.”

The designated site for this training will be the Old Mill Inn, as well as on the locally home-ported C6F flagship USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20).

The staff of NAVEUR-NAVAF/C6F routinely conducts training exercises at various levels throughout the year.
