Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, and Commander, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, Attends Trident Juncture Demonstration

Vice Adm. Lisa Franchetti, commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, and commander, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO attended an exercise Trident Juncture 2018 strength demonstration in Trondheim, Norway, Oct. 30, 2018.

Trident Juncture is designed to test NATO's ability to plan and conduct a major collective defense operation - from troop training at the tactical level, to command over large elements of a NATO force.

The demonstration centered on a Joint Force conducting an amphibious operation, which displayed how NATO forces exercise and train together.

"Trident Juncture is one of NATO's largest exercises," said Franchetti. "It gives us the incredible opportunity to demonstrate the commitment, capability, cohesion, and readiness of all our allies and important NATO partners."

More than 3000 personnel, 22 ships, 12 vehicles, and 56 aircraft from 15 participating nations participated in the demonstration.

A static display area was also featured, where vehicles, weapons and equipment from 15 nations were available for viewing.

"Trident Juncture allows us to improve our capability to work together at sea, defending the sea lanes, and each other if required," said Franchetti. "No single nation can address today's challenges alone, and this exercise demonstrates our combined ability and willingness to work towards the common goals of regional security and stability."

Trident Juncture, a NATO-led exercise, hosted by Norway, will include around 50,000 personnel from NATO countries, as well as Finland and Sweden, and will test NATO's collective response to an armed attack against one ally, invoking Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
