Thanks-for-Giving: Service Members Celebrate Naples Region Volunteers
U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band celebrated the devotion of volunteer organizations that support the military community with a ‘Thanks-for-Giving’ concert held at the Italian Air Force Academy in Pozzuoli, Italy, Nov. 15.
Adm. James G. Foggo III, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and Allied Joint Force Command Naples, Italy, and his wife Cindy Foggo sponsored the concert to show military leadership’s appreciation to the local Italian civic community and the many charitable and family volunteer organizations who have dedicated their support to the NATO and U.S. communities living in Naples.
After thanking Italian Brig. Gen. Enrico Degni for hosting the event, Foggo lauded the commitment and caliber of the volunteers.
“It’s a great honor for Cindy and I to reintroduce this concert,” said Foggo. “A lot of people, including the Air Force Academy, went through a lot of trouble to make this evening happen… This evening is to recognize all the people who are volunteers that make our lives as Americans easier in this community.”
Being assigned overseas can be an exciting time, as well as a daunting experience so the local volunteer organizations and community businesses engage with service members and their families to ensure they have the support they need.
“This is really for the volunteers,” said Cindy Foggo. “I know that you choose to volunteer selflessly and without expectation of being recognized or rewarded. But today, I want from the bottom of my heart to do just that. I want you to know how much your dedication is appreciated.”
Degni also spoke words of thankfulness for the help that the various volunteers had provided in organizing the performance.
“We are pleased and honored to host this concert here tonight,” said Degni. “I want to take this opportunity to also thank the people on my staff and the people who helps to make this evening possible… I think their [help] will prove to be adequate for the success of this joyful evening.”
This year’s ‘Thanks for Giving’ concert is the sixth concert hosted by Naval Forces Europe-Africa and was attended by more than 400 military and civilian guests.
“The concert began in a classic manner, with very classic pieces,” said Bagnoli de Felice, a local Italian that attended the show. “But then it ended in very spontaneous and modern pieces. I enjoyed the performance very, very much.”
U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, oversees joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, to enable enduring relationships and increase vigilance and resilience in Europe and Africa.
