Naval forces from Germany, Norway and the United States began the German-led maritime exercise Eastern Atlantic 2017 (EL17), May 8, in the Norwegian Sea. EL17 is being hosted by the Norwegian Navy and is taking place May 8-26.

EL17 is designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities among regional allies through increased interoperability and realistic training.

“This is the first opportunity we have had to showcase the enhanced Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capabilities of the P-8A Poseidon in Exercise  EASTLANT and look forward to highlighting the United States Navy’s commitment to ASW in the Sixth Fleet Area of Operations especially in the Norwegian Sea.”

– Capt. Bill Ellis, Commander, Task Force 67

Quick Facts:
EL17 highlights the inherent flexibility of maritime forces to demonstrate theater ASW proficiency, providing the right presence where we need it, when we need it.
Personnel will become familiar with each other’s military tactics, techniques and procedures in order to achieve greater interoperability when conducting theater ASW operations.
U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
