ENS Matt Anderson
Ensign Matt Anderson is a native of Lilburn, GA. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Jacksonville State University and a Master of Music Education degree from Florida State University. He enlisted in the Navy in 2004 and attended recruit training in Great Lakes, Illinois. Following training, he reported to the Armed Forces School of Music, Virginia Beach, VA, as a trombone instrumentalist.
ENS Anderson began his enlisted career assigned to SEVENTH Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan. During his tour in Japan, he deployed throughout SEVENTH Fleet’s area of responsibility onboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19). It was during this tour that he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation. In June 2008, he transferred to Navy Band Great Lakes, Great Lakes, IL. This tour was highlighted by his selection as Naval Service Training Command’s Junior Sailor of the Year for 2009. He was promoted to Musician First Class while serving as Ceremonial Band Conductor, Drum Major, and Operations Petty Officer.
In September 2012, he returned to Navy School of Music for Musician “C” School and earned the Unit Leader (3853) designation and subsequently the Career Counselor (9588) designation through the Navy’s Center for Personal and Professional Development in Norfolk, Virginia. Following school, he reported to Navy Band Mid-South and served as Unit Leader for the Brass Quintet, Career Counselor, and Leading Petty Officer.
ENS Anderson’s was selected for commission while assigned to the Navy music program’s management office, Fleet Band Activities, in Millington, TN. There he served as the Audition Coordinator and Detailer Assistant for the Musician (MU) rating. He commissioned as a Limited Duty Officer Bandmaster on December 1, 2016. He is currently assigned as the Assistant Director, U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band.
His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards), Good Conduct Medal (four awards), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and various unit and campaign awards.
