BALTOPS 2015 Daily Report

Seventeen NATO and partner nations are participating in the 43rd iteration of the multinational maritime exercise #BALTOP2015. The exercise is taking place in Poland, Sweden, Germany, and throughout the Baltic Sea, June 5-20, 2015. Approximately 5,600 ground, maritime and air forces from participating nations will demonstrate air defense, maritime interdiction, anti-subsurface warfare, and amphibious operations in a joint environment to ensure regional security.

USS Ross Conducts Underway Engagement with Ukrainian Navy

BLACK SEA – The Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) conducted an underway engagement with the Ukrainian navy Frigate Hetman Sahaydachniy (U 130), June 1, 2015. The purpose of Ross’ presence in the Black Sea is to reassure NATO allies and regional partners of the United States’ commitment to working closely with them to enhance maritime security and stability in the region.

Exercise Open Spirit 2015 Commences in Estonia

TALLINN, Estonia – Members of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 8 began mine countermeasure operations as part of Exercise Open Spirit 2015, May 18.

Conducted annually, Open Spirit brings together explosive ordnance personnel and mine countermeasure units from Europe and North America to conduct real-world operations to detect and neutralize historical ordnance from World Wars I and II.
