NATO-led ASW Exercise Dynamic Mongoose 2020 Concludes

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Austin G. Collins, USS Roosevelt Public Affairs

Naval forces from Canada, France, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States concluded the NATO Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM)-led exercise Dynamic Mongoose 2020 in the northern Atlantic Ocean, July 10, 2020.

Dynamic Mongoose strengthened enduring partnerships and demonstrated interoperability among allied forces. The exercise enhanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities and increased theater ASW capacity with realistic training in the U.S. 6th Fleet (C6F) area of operations (AOO).

"Roosevelt brings new capabilities and increased capacity to an exercise like Dynamic Mongoose. The combination of our advanced sonar suite and embarked MH-60 Romeo enables Roosevelt to conduct anti-submarine warfare in complex and dynamic training scenario like Dynamic Mongoose,” said Cmdr. Ryan Kendall, commanding officer of Roosevelt. “Dynamic Mongoose is a great example of how NATO can quickly and seamlessly integrate into a dynamic fighting force to execute complex anti-submarine warfare tactics. Collaborating with our NATO allies and partners in an anti-submarine warfare exercise such as Dynamic Mongoose strengthens our professional relationships and enhances NATO interoperability, demonstrating our commitment to stability and security in the European maritime domain."

The U.S. assets that participated in the exercise were the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt (DDG 80), the ship’s embarked MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopters, and the Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS Indiana (SSN 789).

“Dynamic Mongoose allowed Indiana to exercise its advanced capabilities as a member of the Allied theater Anti-Submarine Warfare team,” said Cmdr. David Grogan, commanding officer of Indiana. “The well-designed exercise allowed us to better understand our role in the larger team and further improve the readiness and interoperability of Indiana with NATO allies and partners. My team and I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to hone our warfighting skills as part of our steadfast NATO alliance.”

Dynamic Mongoose 2020 highlighted the inherent flexibility of maritime forces operating at sea and demonstrated theater ASW proficiency.
