U.S. 6th Fleet celebrates its 74th anniversary

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Almagissel Schuring

U.S. 6th Fleet (C6F) celebrated its 74th anniversary at their headquarters in Naples, Italy, Feb. 12, 2024.

C6F was established Feb. 12, 1950 with the responsibility for the Mediterranean. C6F provides credible combat forces to Europe and Africa, promoting regional security and stability to ensure safety for the world’s oceans and sea lanes.

For 74 years, C6F has enhanced transatlantic security through support to NATO, building partnership capacity and working with partners to promote trade and freedom, stop unlawful activity at sea, and ensure enduring relationships with allies.

The command’s maritime skills and proficiencies are honed with Allies and partners by conducting more than 70 joint exercises annually.

“Thank you to the C6F team for being willing and agile to serve, and continuing to carry on the tradition of naval service for over 248 years,” said Vice Adm. Thomas Ishee, commander, U.S. 6th Fleet. “C6F will continue to focus on teamwork, readiness and enhancing relationships with Allies and partners.”

C6F, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
