U.S. Navy Assumes Command of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1

KIEL, Germany (June 19, 2021) Cmdr. Jan Wijchers, Royal Netherlands Navy, is relieved by Capt. Sam P. Brasfield as commanding officer of Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One (SNMCMG1), aboard the Blue Ridge-class command and control ship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20), during the change of command ceremony, June 19, 2021 after exercise BALTOPS 50. Brasfield is the first U.S. commander to command a SNMCM. SNMCMGs provides Allied Maritime Command with constant MCM capabilities to ensure safe and secure sea lanes of communication.

U.S. Sixth Fleet announces Sea Breeze 2021 participation

(June 21, 2021) U.S. Sixth Fleet formally announces participation in the upcoming annually held Exercise Sea Breeze 2021 (SB21) cohosted with the Ukrainian Navy, June 21, 2021.The exercise is taking place from June 28 to July 10 in the Black Sea region and will focus on multiple warfare areas including amphibious warfare, field operations, diving operations, maritime interdiction operations, air defense, special operations integration, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue operations.

VP-4 Participates in BALTOPS 50

NORDHOLZ, Germany (June 19, 2021)  VP-4’s Combat Aircrew TEN lands and refuels at Nordholz, Germany’s airfield (ETMN) while supporting BALTOPS 50 exercise.  Also, VP-4 celebrates with ETMN personnel by being the 39,000 aircraft landing at the airfield. Held annually since 1972, BALTOPS is the premier maritime-led exercise in the Baltic Sea region and one of the largest exercises in northern Europe. BALTOPS 50 hosted 16 NATO countries and two partner nations providing high-end training across the entire spectrum of naval warfare.

BLACK SEA (June 17, 2021) HMS Defender, USS Laboon and HMNLS Evertsen take station for close proximity sailing as a Russian warship watches from afar (rear of picture) whilst on maritime operations in the Black Sea. On Thursday 17th June 2021, HMS Defender conducted close proximity sailing with allied warships HMNLS Evertsen and USS Laboon whilst operating in the Black Sea, east of the Mediterranean.The ships have been working closely with each other honing various communication skills and navigation exercises.The close proximity sailing often referred to as a SCREENEX is the culmination of the last few days of serials formulating into one final exercise. BALTOPS 50 Comes to a Close

Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) ships HMCS Halifax, HDMS Absalon, FS Commandant Blaison, HNoMS Storm and HNoMS Gnist participate in a PHOTOEX with RFA Mounts Bay and HMS Albion off the coast of Denmark on June 6th, 2021 during Exercise BALTOPS 50. BALTOPS is an annual joint, multinational maritime-focused defence exercise designed to enhance interoperability, flexibility, and demonstrate resolve among Allied and partner forces to defend the Baltic Sea Region. It involves maritime and air forces, strengthening combined response capabilities necessary to ensure regional security and stability.
