Through MAKO Storm, Sailors Will Sharpen Lethality and Warrior Mindset

By Lt. j.g. Rebecca Ives

Navy Reserve Sailors from U.S. 6th Fleet will participate the 5th annual MAKO Storm exercise at the Navy Warfare Development Center, May 14–17.

MAKO Storm is a four-day Maritime Operation Center event, part of the annual MAKO training series designed to simulate a high intensity real-world operational level of war environment. Sailors are confronted with multi-domain conflict scenarios and are challenged to close operational gaps under pressure with accuracy and speed to support seamless execution of MOC command decisioning.

“The MAKO series is imperative to our fleet’s readiness. It provides our Reserve Sailors with the hands-on training necessary to operate seamlessly within our Maritime Operations Centers,” said Rear Adm. Jason “PADI” Naidyhorski, vice commander, U.S. 6th Fleet. “In today’s complex security environment, our ability to achieve decision advantage depends on a ready force that can act decisively.”

During the exercise, Reserve Sailors will be immersed in their roles within the MOC, learning and following procedures for maritime operations, and participating in everything from intelligence briefings to emergency response.

“MAKO Storm provides Reserve Sailors the opportunity to learn the systems and build the processes that forge warfighters that are able to outthink and outmaneuver any adversary across all domains of naval warfare,” said Naidyhorski.

The MAKO exercise series is an ongoing training evolution, providing continued opportunities for the Navy Reserve force to sharpen their skills and remain ready for the fight. Reserve members and units looking to be MOC qualified may contact the Commander Naval Reserve Forces Command MAKO core planning team to register for one of the remaining exercise events this year.
