PERS-41 speaks to SWOs, Spouses, at Symposium

By Lt. j.g Teresa C. Meadows

Navy Personnel Command (PERS) 41 was welcomed by commander, Task Force (CTF) 65 and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60 during a Spouse Symposium at La Plaza restaurant in Rota, Spain, on May 8, 2019.

The event allowed Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) spouses to meet PERS-41, the detailers responsible for SWO job assignment.

“It's a real privilege to be able to talk to the spouses of our SWOs,” said Capt. Derek Trinque, director, PERS-41.“I know I could not continue serving without the support of my wife and children. We detailers can answer a lot of questions by talking to the officers, but the spouses of course sometimes have different outlooks on duty stations and career choices than the officers themselves.”

Trinque and members of his staff gave an overview of the SWO community and presented on topics such as career milestones before taking questions and mingling with the attendees.

“We had a great turnout of SWOs and their families to learn more about Navy career opportunities,” Capt. Drew Bates, chief staff officer of DESRON 60. “The presentations and frank answers provided by PERS-41 really helped to ensure spouses are informed and involved in managing their futures in the Navy family.”

Spouses in attendance gained a better understanding about the community and were able to ask PERS-41 questions about the job assignment process, the SWO community, career milestones, and more.

“I emphasized [to those present] that all of the detailers in PERS-41 are always happy to talk to spouses as well as officers when we're negotiating orders,” said Trinque. “I want to ensure we answer all the questions a family has before we issue a set of orders.”

CTF 65 and DESRON 60, headquartered in Rota, oversee the forward-deployed forces of U.S. 6th Fleet’s area of operation in support of regional allies and partners as well as U.S. national security interests in Europe and Africa.

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
